Rainbow Democratic Club held the
very first
Extravaganza on November 17th in the Footlight Theater at The Parliament
House, co-hosted by Miss Sammy and Michael Wanzie.
MC Miss Sammy was dazzling as Dorothy, entertaining the
crowd with her comedic wit and finishing the night with
a hilarious original song. Michael was both funny
and sharp as co-emcee, providing the perfect foil for
Miss Sammy at the Democratic fundraiser.
The event also featured two
standup comics and two very special awards. The comics,
"Beth" and Arnie Ellis,
skewered the Republicans, lampooned current events and
roasted the night's Guest of Honor Bob Wesley.
Awards went to both Orange/Osceola County
Public Defender Bob Wesley, who received RDC's Dorothy
Award, (also known as "The Ruby Slippers") and Orlando
City Commissioner Daisy Lynum, (though she was unable to attend)
who received the William Jefferson
Clinton Award.
The Wizard of Oz theme
permeated the evening, capped off with a costume
contest and a $100 cash prize. The judges panel,
presided over by Marni Stahlman, was well
rounded with city council candidates John Ruffier
and Jeff Horn, Orlando Weekly reporter Lindy
Shepherd and NY entertainer Rick.
Numerous raffle prizes (including a vase from Scott
Laurent Galleries and a DVD of "Angels in America")
were drawn by State House Dst. 36 candidate Scott
Randolph to finish off the fun.
RDC thanks Don Granatstein and
Susan Unger of The Parliament House, Michael Wanzie
and Miss Sammy, along with all the judges (Marni
Stahlman, John Ruffier, Jeff Horn, Lindy Shepherd and
Rick) and volunteers (Scott Randolph, Gretchen Ault,
Patty Sharp, Kim Bowles, Ridge, Michael Johnson, Luis
Grajales, Carol Bartsch, Kim Newton and Gerry Hamilton)
who made the Emerald City Extravaganza a fabulous night
